Matt’s story
I started as a plasterer, and I’ve never really left site
I trained as a plasterer and that is how I started out — skimming ceilings and walls, doing repairs, working for other people. Plastering teaches you a lot about building, because you are the one who has to make everyone else’s work look right at the end. If the joinery is out or the plumbing has been chased in badly, you find out.
I have been running Youngs Renovations & Maintenance for around ten years now. It grew the way most trade businesses do — one job leading to the next, a bit of word of mouth, and gradually taking on bigger work until we were doing full extensions and whole-house renovations rather than just the plastering on them.
What has not changed is that I am still on the tools and still the person you deal with. When you ring the number on this website, it is me. When I quote a job, I have walked round it myself. And when the work is happening, I am there — not managing it from an office somewhere.
If I wouldn’t accept it in my own house, it doesn’t get signed off in yours.
How we work
Treating every job like it’s our own house
Most of our work happens in houses people are still living in. That changes how you have to behave. It means dust sheets and floor protection as standard, sweeping up at the end of the day rather than at the end of the week, and keeping the working area to the room we are actually in.
It also means keeping people informed. You should know who is turning up, roughly what time, and what is happening next — and if something changes, you should hear it from us before you notice it yourself. A lot of the complaints people have about builders come down to nobody telling them anything, and that part is easy to fix.
On pricing, we would rather have the awkward conversation up front than halfway through. If a job is going to need something extra — a lintel that was not visible, damp behind plaster, wiring that is not up to scratch — we will show you, explain what it means and price it before we carry on.

Domestic projects
Extensions and full house renovations for homeowners — the bigger, longer jobs where you are living with the work for weeks and the finish matters. These are the projects the company was built on, and they are still the bulk of what we do. Because Matt came up as a plasterer, the finishing trades get the attention they usually do not.
Maintenance contracts
The side of the business that has grown most recently: ongoing maintenance for landlords, estate agents and care homes. Reactive repairs, void turnarounds, planned works and the small jobs that are hard to get a reliable trade out for. We are small enough to answer the phone and broad enough across the trades to deal with most of it.

Coventry and across the West Midlands
We are based at 57 Hipswell Highway in Coventry, and Coventry is where most of our work is. We also take on projects and contracts across the wider West Midlands.
